Knowledge, experience and professional practice
Importance of practical knowledge has risen
In the majority of the requirement profiles, employers address what the future employees must be able to do for the advertised position (89.4 %). Seven years ago, considerably fewer offers contained specific knowledge, experience or qualifications that are helpful in the job search and on the job.
Safety is the top priority in transport logistics. Professional drivers are responsible for stowing the cargo securely in order to avoid damage or accidents caused by shifting loads. When selecting staff, employers therefore pay even more attention to sound knowledge of load securing than in the past.
Before setting off, drivers must check their vehicle to ensure everything is working. One in four employers explicitly wants the specialists to bring certain technical knowledge and to be able to carry out minor repairs themselves. Careful handling of the freight documents – i.e. checking them or using them correctly when processing the freight transport – is also part of everyday working life.
Anyone driving vehicles with a permissible total weight of more than 3.5 tonnes must carry a driver card, provided the vehicle falls within the scope of the social regulations and the tachograph requirement. The driving and working data of professional drivers are documented on its memory chip. They must operate the digital control device correctly in order to record whether it is currently a driving or rest period or whether they are carrying out other work. Other points, such as experience on construction sites or with the disposal of certain substances, are directly related to the employer’s industry or to which goods the employees transport.
Professional experience is „desirable“
In not even half of the requirement profiles are there indications of how experienced the ideal applicants should be (42.3 %). Employers presumably do not want to narrow the number of applicants in advance and therefore omit this point.
A good third of the sought-after specialists should already have gathered relevant professional experience (35.4 %); however, this wish is sometimes accompanied by the addition „desirable“. Some of the offers are aimed directly at job seekers without professional experience (6.6 %), and in seventeen cases career changers also have a chance.
Only for one in twenty positions should drivers have already been working in freight transport for a long time.
